Today we’re talking with Sigurdur Gunnarsson, Co-Founder and CTO of Hyperion Realms, a fully remote game company with employees around the world. They are working on crafting the next generation of open world survival games and needed a tech stack that could meet their global needs. Keep reading to learn about why Hyperion Realms chose Assembla Perforce Cloud for their first project.
Tell us what you can about the project you are making using Assembla.
We’re working on an unannounced video game that is still in production.
What led you to Assembla for this project?
We considered GitHub, but Assembla was listed as the official cloud hosting provider for Perforce. Perforce hosted by Assembla is also easier for our artists and non-engineers to use. They have a tough time understanding terms like rebase and merging – it’s not part of their everyday workflow – and they generally find Github harder to use than Perforce. In Perforce, they were able to quickly get comfortable with the sync/submit workflow and merges are generally handled by someone else in engineering.
What were the major pain points that Assembla solved?
Dealing with large binary assets is a lot easier with Perforce. We don’t need to worry about Git extensions like LFS (large file storage)… it just works.
Describe how using Perforce hosting with Assembla has helped you reduce costs.
We don’t need an IT person to run servers. As an early-stage startup, we don’t have the capacity to hire a full-time IT person, so managing a server would fall to someone else on the team – probably me. If we had gone with Git, the server cost wouldn’t be there, but I would need to spend a lot of time supporting the team in their daily activities. With Assembla, I can focus on higher priority tasks for the company. The time savings of not having to maintain a server ourselves is well worth the money paid.
Was there an occasion where Assembla exceeded expectations?
The team has been very friendly and easy to work with and they clearly state expectations up front. The service itself has been more stable than I expected. It works exactly as advertised which, sadly, is not always the case.
