The challenge

Falcon's Beyond is a publicly listed global entertainment company. It brings stories to life through theme parks, resorts, animation, consumer products, gaming, movies, and more. Its Falcon’s Creative Group business unit is one of the world's leading themed entertainment and master planning firms where creative vision, compelling design, immersive media, and cutting-edge technology intersect to bring imagination to life.

Falcon’s Creative Group develops complex forms of experiential content such as interactive installations, dark rides, films, animations, and more.

The team required a robust version control system that could handle the type of digital assets in their pipeline and integrate seamlessly with Unreal Engine.

When Falcon’s decided to lean into Unreal Engine, compatibility issues emerged, prompting a reevaluation of their workflow.

Looking into standalone VCS solutions, the group first considered the idea of using Git and leveraging the large file size (LFS) extension in order to handle the type of binaries they were producing. However, as Saham Ali recounted, Git is “not that [well] integrated” with Unreal.

Perforce seemed like the obvious solution. However, after an initial consultation with Perforce Software, it became clear that the responsibility for managing the instance would very much lie with the company. As an agile creative group, Falcon's did not want the burden of managing and maintaining the VCS infrastructure.

"With Assembla we could focus on simply using Perforce in the cloud.”

Saham Ali
Executive Vice President of Technology

Why Assembla

The team — led by Saham Ali, Executive Vice President of Technology — then turned to Assembla's solutions. Initially, the team opted for hosting on a shared environment (Assembla Perforce Cloud). Ali's team was enthusiastic about the product but quickly ran up against the capacity constraints on shared infrastructure (1TB of storage, 50 users).

Ali — who oversaw the rollout — was impressed by the Assembla team's responsiveness and attention to detail. He decided that the Enterprise product with dedicated infrastructure was the best fit for the creative studio’s intense workflow and predicted level of scale.

Being able to tap into Assembla's deep knowledge meant that Falcon’s wouldn’t have to hire a Perforce manager. Additionally, they didn't have to forego the kind of granular customization that's essential for effective version control. As Ali put it:

"The value we saw was that we had Assembla's expertise to stand up in the infrastructure in AWS. But Assembla also then managed that infrastructure. And we could focus on consuming the services. And it was also ideal that Assembla also facilitated the migration. Assembla took our repos that were hosted in Perforce Cloud and moved them straight over to our dedicated instance. It was seamless."

Technical deployment

Assembla's Perforce managed hosting delivered on its promise of offering a best-of-both-worlds approach.

Falcon's worked with Assembla to create a bespoke hosted Perforce solution which took care of all of the team's pain points.

  • Assembla managed the migration from the Multi-Tenant to the Single-Tenant environment, a process described by Ali as “seamless.”

  • Assembla seamlessly integrated the team's SSO provider into the managed Perforce instance, ensuring seamless identity control with the VCS tool. Ali remarked, “That integration was very painless.”

  • Assembla introduced the Perforce Enterprise Dashboard, a self-service tool available with Premium and Platinum support packages. This dashboard empowered Falcon's to administer and download their own backups of the instance. Ali emphasized the significance of this feature, stating, “We found that we didn't need to call you guys [Assembla] anywhere near as much.” Additionally, administrators could effortlessly increase storage capacity by 25GB at the touch of a button. This self-service mechanism provided a significant advantage for Falcon ambitious scaling plans.

The migration process between Assembla products was seamless, as Ali attested: “Everything that you said was going to happen happened.” Despite considering a competitor offering managed Perforce hosting, Falcon's was dissuaded upon learning that maintaining a dedicated Perforce engineer would still be necessary. Assembla stood out by offering full customization while effectively managing the infrastructure.

While the Falcon's team were already well-versed in how to operate Perforce, the managed approach which Assembla provided has allowed them to stay focused on development and pipeline management rather than maintaining the infrastructure backing the instance – a time-intensive aspect that diverted important development resources from the main value-add of their work.
