Last week, we officially released our product roadmap for the next nine months in a live webinar. We covered some of the improvements and innovations you can expect to see in Assembla very soon. If you missed the presentation but want to know all the details, you can now watch the webinar here or continue reading this article. The video contains a Q&A session that may answer some of your own questions, so watch it for important additional information.

New Release Strategy

As part of this announcement, we also introduced a new release strategy aimed at addressing our customers’ needs more promptly and efficiently. This strategy has already significantly increased the number of issues we are able to resolve in a four-week sprint. This is allowing us to deliver smaller but impactful improvements and releases more quickly – and we’re only getting started.

Our Roadmap Pillars

As we planned our platform’s future, we set our sights on improving our wide array of source code and collaboration tools. However, we also want to deliver features that will make Assembla the fastest, most secure and flexible source code management platform. Below are the key areas where we plan to deliver top-notch features and performance to our users.

Product Quality

We’re focused on enhancing the quality and usability of our current features. This includes making our ticketing tools, project management, user management, text markdowns, wikis, and code review capabilities even better. Our goal is to make these tools more reliable, intuitive, and efficient so you can work smarter.

New Features, Improved Features

Get ready for a range of new and improved features. We’re adding better project metrics for deeper insights, streamlined code reviews for faster collaboration, and advanced user management. Plus, look forward to new text formatting options, customizable wiki and ticket templates, Git LFS support, a smarter search system, an AI-powered docs assistant.

Performance and Scalability

We’re enhancing our cloud infrastructure to boost performance and scalability. This includes adding multi-region instances in specific areas for better global access for your distributed teams. We’re also developing a self-hosted version of our platform, giving you more control and flexibility over your deployments.

Security and Compliance

Assembla has been going strong for 18 years without a single security breach and we are just as dedicated to security as we were on day one. We will keep enhancing our security and data protection processes by continuously adopting new and robust measures in the features we’re developing and improving.

Roadmap Highlights

Smarter Search System

Addressing one of our customers’ top requests, we will soon improve Assembla’s search engine to make finding what you need quicker and easier. Our goal is to deliver smarter and more relevant search results, enhancing your ability to locate tickets, wikis, commits, and merge requests. By optimizing our search engine configurations and boosting performance, we aim to provide clearer and more organized results. Additionally, we’ll be implementing a quick project space search feature to streamline your workflow and help you access information swiftly without changing screens.

Enhanced Wiki & Ticket Inputs

We’re prioritizing enhancements to the WYSIWYG editor and templates to address user feedback and improve usability. This update includes a new and improved text markdown system, better text editors, and a more robust templating system for tickets and wikis. Additionally, it brings enhancements and new features to our ticketing and documentation system, as well as improvements to the organization and clarity of search results across all projects.

New Geo Regions, On-Prem Version and Enhanced Performance

We’re expanding our cloud infrastructure to enhance scalability, performance, and global accessibility. This includes deploying multi-region instances in specific geographic areas and offering a self-hosted version. Initial development has started, with plans to address several key areas in the coming quarters: Assembla Portfolios will be available in regional AWS clusters, direct repository access will improve performance, enhanced file servers will boost performance, and increased security capabilities will safeguard your data.

SCM Code Review & Release Management

Nearly 50% of our survey participants requested enhancements to the code review process workflow. This update aims to meet customer needs and improve the code review experience with new features like an adjustable code review flow, review requests, tags, a version release system, repository policies, and more. Expect an enhanced merge request review flow, new code reviews and change requests, improved code repository policies and rules, and new tagging and versioning systems.

Git LFS

We’re making our Git LFS (Large File Storage) support public. This enhancement will enable large file handling within our platform’s Git repositories, improving file management capabilities for smoother workflows and enhanced efficiency. Stay tuned for updates as we roll out this functionality, including full Git LFS support, better handling for large files and projects, and improved overviews for media files.

Project Management Metrics

We’re gearing up to introduce a new customizable metrics dashboard for our project management tools. This feature will include various widgets aimed at providing enhanced monitoring and analysis capabilities. Stay tuned for updates as we work towards implementing these improvements, offering a more flexible metrics approach, a customizable dashboard, and better overviews of your project and code.
